DAVID DUCHOVNY CONFIRMS NEW X-FILES SCRIPT

Will our favorite FBI agents, Mulder and Scully, be returning to the big screen? It sounds like a third X-Files film may be in the works according to TVMag.com. When David Duchovny was interviewed by the french entertainment site, he told them, ”It i being written. One awaits just the green light from Fox, a little disappointed from the relatively poor reception of the second film. The error comes, in my opinion, that the authors strayed too far from the roots of the series. Moreover, the film was released in the summer. The third will be much closer to what the public expects, with government conspiracies, etc.

As most people know, X-Files began as a television series on FOX, which ran from 1993-2003. The series is considered to be one of the greatest Sci-Fi shows in television history. The show was turned into a movie in 1998 and received positive reviews. Then in 2008, the long awaited sequel entitled X-Files: I Want To Believe, was released to mixed reviews.  X-Files fans seemed extremely disappointed with the film, which was considered a box office bomb.

Do you think there is a calling to see Mulder and Scully on the big screen again? Let us know what you think!

By: Alleyphile - Posted November 6th, 2010 10:12pm

I actually really enjoyed the second film (in fact, I don’t actually know any of my friends who didn’t), so I’m absolutely on board for another X-Files film. Bring it on!

By: Kate - Posted November 6th, 2010 10:14pm

Oh My God…. I’m happy…..

XF 3 \o/

By: starbuck - Posted November 6th, 2010 10:25pm

No. I love the franchise, but enough is enough. And yes, many X-Files fans were disappointed in the last film. Not ALL, but since this story was linked to on a fan board, beware that many of the comments you will get will be in favor of a new film. Many of the fans disappointed in XF2 have left the fandom.

Stop beating a dead horse.

By: dennis - Posted November 6th, 2010 10:26pm

Definitely hoping this movie gets made!! The X-Files needs a proper ending to the alien invasion plotline. THIS would be the movie fans of the series have been waiting for. Disappointment in the last movie was because it wasn’t THIS movie. A movie that finally resolves the invasion plot would elevate the entire series. Don’t let one movie you didnt like stop this one from being made. The entire story has been building up to this film. People will see it. The timing is right.

By: Justin - Posted November 6th, 2010 10:45pm

I was definitely in Roger Ebert’s camp in regard to XF2. It was a good creepy movie which tried to entertain with a scary story, a supernatural tinged psychic angle, and real people instead of lots of special effects. I thought it was wonderfully done and had it been released in the fall around Halloween I feel it would have fared much better at the box office. My roommate at the time went to see it twice in the theater and she had NEVER seen an entire episode of the show.

That said… Yes, I’m completely onboard with another movie. I’m not entirely sure the point Starbuck was trying to make about this story being linked to a fan board. It seems to me that if The X Files still has a fan board after being off the air for about eight years then the franchise still has relevence. Now where’s that fan board??? :)

By: Kharma - Posted November 6th, 2010 10:59pm

p.s. I just saw that the author of the comment I referenced was Justin rather than Starbuck. My apologies.

By: Kharma - Posted November 6th, 2010 11:00pm

Where is that fan board? http://www.XFilesNews.com and yes it has relevance, otherwise why would people still be talking about a series that has been off the air since May of 2002?

By: Tiffany Devol - Posted November 6th, 2010 11:03pm

I think the author of the comment you referenced was Dennis, not me. I’m all for a third film and wouldn’t want anyone to think I wasn’t lol

By: Justin - Posted November 6th, 2010 11:05pm

Re: Dennis

I suppose you were once a phile that you know this was linked on a forum since you claim that the fans have left the fandom over the last movie. I find kind of ironic that you warn people to beware of the fans since these are the people that would watch a movie… I dont see the point of your message, on the one hand youre saying you dont want a amovie but that theres still fans, yet so what is it? you dont want a movie but for the fans to be disappointed?
Its kind of odd…
In any case the reasons for it to be a third movie should be backed up by the amount of interest something so small like this announcement has brought… Yes some fans have left the fandom… but so many have come in

By: Alleyphile - Posted November 6th, 2010 11:06pm

my point was, since the author of this post asked what readers thought, and it was posted on a fan board, many of the comments will be FOR a third film. don’t read that much into it, people. just an opinion, like the rest of you.

and yes, the fans would watch the movie, but fans didn’t make the last film become a blockbuster. believe what you all want, but the vast majority of people think it bombed at the box office. (see original post)

XF will surely always have relevance, but some people think it’s time to end it, and others don’t. In the end, FOX has the final say, really. If they think it’ll make money, they’ll do it. If not, we’ll always have Mulder and Scully, right?

By: dennis - Posted November 7th, 2010 12:35am

It was a fan news site that originally broke the story after picking it up from the original french source and translating it.

I am sure people that saw it there will also see it here but the fact remains that regardless of how badly IWTB did at the box office, the series has a story line with a built in audience and looming date. It has no less of a chance of getting green lit than any other film without a built in fan base.

We can go over and over the reasons why it didn’t make enough money the second time around, a big part having to do with the release of The Dark Knight and the fact that IWTB was not summer blockbuster material, but in the end, some people liked the story and others didn’t. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but even some of the fans who really did not like IWTB, are excited over the prospect of a mythology film for the third go around.

X-files 3 needs to happen!!
Bring it on!

By: GillianScully - Posted November 7th, 2010 8:19am

Yes and no.

Yes, if and ONLY IF you do NOT allow Chris Carter to take part in writing the script, and directing the movie. Just look at what happened when that was allowed for “I Want To Believe”. I love “The X-Files” and all, but that movie made not want to revist the series because the writer(s) and the director forgot what made “The X-Files” so great back in the day. Also, allow the series’ mythology (alien colonization threat, government conspiracies, etc.) to close to allow the XF story to end. Also, remember that the relationship between Mulder and Scully happened in the seasons that most fans (not all) dislike, UST between them is great, but this full-fledged relationship is very boring to watch. Encourage the writer(s) of the script to not linger on a relationship that has been around for ten years, there’s nothing interesting about it, for me.

I suggest asking JJ Abrams to come in and write the script and direct it. If a third XF movie is going to happen, it needs new blood in order to revive the franchise from its own “I Want To Believe” death.

I would also suggest being open to bringing in actor Robert Patrick as John Doggett as he played one of the two main characters in the series’ last two seasons, he’s a vital character and a major player in the story of the XF mythology.

No, because after “I Want To Believe”, I have lost all faith in the writer(s) to come up with a story that will actually feel like “The X-Files” series. That second movie played like bad fan fiction, and if that’s any indication of what we would be given with a third movie, I’m NOT interested in going back to the world of “The X-Files”, I’d much rather hunt down well-written fan fiction that deals with the series’ mythology to get my closure, than to watch something on a big screen that bores me so much again. I have no interest in watching Duchovny and Anderson play the Mulder and Scully characters which have (by IWTB) become unrecognizable from the great characters that they had been on the series. I’d rather remember “The X-Files” for how great it was, and for the potential that it never reached.

I want to believe that “The X-Files” could have ended well and given fans closure to the mythology, but I’ve lost my faith that the writers/creator behind the franchise can actually provide real fans with something entertaining and unique.

By: Cassie - Posted November 7th, 2010 8:20am

Absolutely!!!! There is no question that there are millions of fans who would gladly like to see a third movie returning to the mytharc of the series. The series left us with an impending alien colonization, and I’m sure many fans want to see it happen on the big screen. Give it the green light FOX!!!!

By: Pat R - Posted November 7th, 2010 8:45am

As long as David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson want to continue in their roles there will be life for this franchise. If you haven’t seen IWTB please do.

By: donna - Posted November 7th, 2010 8:54am

Yes! As much as I loved the 2nd movie, I want to see the show go out in glory with the mythology of the series…anything will do actually, although a conspiracy storyline would be much prefered!
