‘HARRY’S LAW’ LANDS ONE OF THE GREATS IN GETTING BATES

It’s a major coup for a television show to land an Academy Award-winning actor for a guest-starring role, but the new series “Harry’s Law” has taken it a step further, landing 1991 Best Actress Oscar winner Kathy Bates as its title character.  Bates might have been attracted by the show’s pedigree — it’s the latest legal drama from David E. Kelley, who’s created shows like “Boston Legal,” “The Practice,” and “Ally McBeal,” but when we asked Bates about her reasons for taking the role, she went straight to the heart of the character.

The series premiere of “Harry’s Law” is tonight on NBC.

THE GREEN HORNET MADE A LOT OF ‘GREEN’ AT THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

The Green Hornet, Seth Rogen’s action/comedy film based on the 1960′s television show, finished #1 at the box office this weekend earning $34.0 million. The Green Hornet has been a passion project for Rogen, who not only stars in the film, but also co-wrote and produced it. Rogen worked on this film for years, and his hard work has definitely paid off.

The Dilemma, Ron Howard’s comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, grossed $17.4 million this weekend taking the #2 spot at the box office. Most in Hollywood expected the film to earn a lot more money, even despite the film’s negative reviews.

True Grit, the remake of the 1969 John Wayne movie directed by the Coen Brothers (starring Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld), came in at #3 grossing $11.2 million. Hailee Steinfeld won a Critics Choice Award on Friday night for Best Young Actor/Actress, and has a very good chance of winning another award for her outstanding performance in this film at the Golden Globe Awards tonight.

Rounding out the top movies were The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, earning $9.1 million in the #4 spot, and at #5 was The Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman, which made $8.1 million. Both Colin Firth and Natalie Portman are the front runners to win the best actor/actress awards at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.
