RUSSELL BRAND IS KING OF THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Russell Brand should be feeling great today. Brand has two movies at the top of the box office. The family movie, Hop, starring his voice, was the #1 film at the box office this weekend for the second week in a row, earning $21.7 million. The film is presently the only new family movie in theatres, and should continue to be at the top of the box office for the next few weeks.
Brand’s other new movie, Arthur, the remake of the 1981 classic comedy, was #2 this weekend pulling in $12.6 million. Despite its mostly negative reviews, the film still performed rather well.
The action film, Hanna, starring Saoirse Ronan and Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, came in at #3 grossing $12.3 million. The film is about a sixteen year old assassin, and received mostly positive reviews. By word of mouth, it should attract more of an audience in the coming weeks.
Rounding out the top five films this weekend was Soul Surfer (based on the true story of a girl who lost her arm in a surfing accident) at #4 earning $11.1 million, and the horror movie Insidious came in at #5 earning $9.7 million in its second week of release.
