JAMES FRANCO AMAZED AT ANDY SERKIS ACTING LIKE AN ‘APE’

When the original “Planet of the Apes” movies were made in the ‘60s and ‘70s, the apes were just actors in ape costumes.  Not this time around, though… now, it’s being done digitally, with the “main ape,” Caesar, animated based on the motions of actor Andy Serkis.  We could call it “Ape-atar”…  and James Franco was amazed at how easy it was to film scenes with Andy as an ape.  Of course, Andy’s not new to this kind of thing… as James reminds us, he basically did the same thing for the “Lord of the Rings” movies. (Click on the audio player to hear James Franco)

I mean he was cast in Gollum just for his voice and then I guess Peter Jackson realized what a great performance — physical performance he was giving and that he should try and capture that in some way, so Andy kind of fell into this performance capture type world and has really pioneered it and so Rupert wanted him to immediately.”

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” opens in theatres Friday.
