KATHY REICHS: NEW BOOK’S HERO LIKE A TEENAGE ‘BONES’

Kathy Reichs has a pretty interesting day job — intriguing enough that a hit TV show is based on her work. So if she’s going to do something on the side, obviously it’s going to be something special.

Reichs is one of the world’s best-known forensic anthropologists, which means she’s an expert at examining skeletal remains. In layman’s terms, she knows all there is to know about bones. So it should come as no surprise that her work is the basis of the show “Bones.”

On the side, Reichs is a very successful novelist. Her series of Temperance Brennan mysteries — based, like the TV show, on Reichs’ real-life job — has yielded 14 books in as many years, and has become a fixture on best-seller charts both here and abroad.

Last year, with some prodding from her son, Reichs decided to start a new series of books, aimed at the young adult audience. “Virals,” the first book, was released last fall, and the second book in the series, “Seizure,” will be released on Tuesday.

The new series follows the adventures of a group of four teens led by Tory Brennan. And as the last name suggests, yes, there is a connection between Tory and Temperance. In fact, when we spoke to Reichs, she suggested that, in some ways, it’s almost as if Tory is the young Temperance. (Click play to hear Kathy Reichs.)

Reichs wrote the first Tory Brennan novel after writing 13 of the Temperance Brennan books. While she says the scientific approach to the mysteries is basically the same, Reichs told us there had to be some fundamental differences between the characters in the two series.
