KATHERINE MCPHEE’S WORK ON SMASH MORE GRUELING THAN AMERICAN IDOL

Katherine McPhee became a star after she was a contestant on season five of American Idol. McPhee finished in second place next to Taylor Hicks. Since then, McPhee has gone on to do movies and currently stars in the NBC musical drama, Smash.

While American Idol was a great and grueling experience for McPhee, she told us that starring on Smash is more grueling, and that she has to pace herself while being on a television series.

Smash airs on NBC. For more on Smash, check out http://www.nbc.com/smash/

SINGING SELENA GOMEZ SONGS? SHE’S LISTENING!

Selena Gomez first achieved fame as a TV star, breaking through on Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.” And with the series drawing to a close earlier this year, she’s been making the transition into movies. However, she hasn’t limited herself to the visual media — she’s also had success with a music career. With her band, The Scene, she’s released three albums since 2009, recently making the Top 10 with the hit “Love You Like A Love Song.”

As is the norm these days, her songs have spawned countless fan-performed cover versions on YouTube. When we spoke to Gomez, she told us she enjoys watching other people sing her songs… and admitted there are some who sing them better than she does!

‘OSCAR NOMINEE’ TITLE CHANGES JONAH HILL’S LIFE

For the past several years, Jonah Hill has been known mainly as a comedic actor. Although he has done a few dramas, including the film Cyrus, it wasn’t until his role as Peter Brand in the baseball film Moneyball, that both audiences and critics became aware that Hill isn’t just a comedic actor. The film earned Hill an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.

Hill is still in awe that he is an Oscar nominee, and said that having that accomplishment to name for the rest of his career is an honor.

The 84th Academy Awards airs Sunday night. For more on the Oscars check out www.oscars.com

SARAH JONES: ‘ALCATRAZ’ DUO IN SEARCH OF IDENTITY

On Fox’s Monday night hit “Alcatraz,” Sarah Jones and Jorge Garcia star as Detective Rebecca Madsen and Dr. Diego Soto, who become enveloped in the mystery when inmates from the notorious prison begin turning up on the streets of San Francisco, unchanged since they supposedly were transferred off the island in 1963.

Prior to joining the Alcatraz task force, Madsen was a fast-rising star for the SFPD, while Soto was the world’s foremost expert on “The Rock.”

But once they were recruited for the task force by Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill), their lives, as they knew them, changed for good.

Of course, there’s the obvious:  They’re now an integral part of solving a huge, dangerous mystery, trying to re-apprehend these notorious criminals, all while making sure the public never knows who they truly are.

But each of them has also seen their personal reality altered: Madsen found out that her family history was a lie, while Soto’s learned that his life’s work has been all wrong.

So while they’re confronting deadly criminals, Jones told Fox All Access they’re also confronting the emotions that come from essentially having their identities stripped from them.

An all-new episode of “Alcatraz” airs tonight at 9/8c on Fox.

D’OH! HOMER SIMPSON GOES BUST AT THE FOX LOT

Alchemists, eat your heart out.  Today, they turned yellow into bronze at the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles.

To honor “The Simpsons” reaching its landmark 500th episode, the show’s producers, Fox employees, and foreign dignitaries gathered to eat pink donuts (mmmm, donuts…) and watch as a bust of Mr. Homer J. Simpson himself was unveiled.

Fox All Access was there — after all, who can resist pink donuts? — and we captured the moment on video for all you “Simpsons” fans out there.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t save you a donut.

Watch the 500th episode of “The Simpsons” this Sunday night at 8/7c on Fox.

‘HOPE’S’ CLORIS LEACHMAN: THE REAL GOLDEN GIRL

Betty White might be grabbing more headlines, but even her illustrious career can’t compare to her friend and former co-star, Cloris Leachman.  Not only has the former beauty queen won an Academy Award, but she also holds the record for most Emmys won by an actor, with nine.  And at age 85, Leachman’s still working hard.  These days, she’s on the Fox comedy “Raising Hope,” and her performance as “Maw-Maw” has been a hit with fans and critics alike.  When we talked to her “Raising Hope” co-stars, Martha Plimpton and Garret Dillahunt, we found out that Leachman doesn’t save the funny for when the camera’s on (she’s just as outrageous off camera!), and they have plenty of admiration for her work.

Check out a new episode of “Raising Hope,” tonight at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.

WHITNEY HOUSTON RECALLS HER HOLLYWOOD DAYS

As you no doubt already know, the music world lost one of its contemporary legends yesterday, when Whitney Houston passed away at the far-too-young age of 48. When she died, she was at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, preparing to attend the annual pre-Grammys party thrown by her mentor, Clive Davis.

Signed by Davis to Arista Records in 1983, she became a superstar two years later, when three songs from her debut album — “Saving All My Love For You,” “How Will I Know” and “Greatest Love Of All” — each soared to Number 1 on the Billboard pop chart.
She would top the chart an additional eight times during her career, with her biggest hit coming in 1992, when she spent 14 weeks at Number 1 with the cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” she recorded for her movie debut, “The Bodyguard.” Years ago, Houston spoke to us about that film and why she loved it. (Click on the audio player to hear Whitney Houston)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Houston followed up her initial Hollywood success with two other memorable movie roles, in 1995′s “Waiting To Exhale” and 1996′s “The Preacher’s Wife.” She told us she considered taking acting lessons, but was talked out of it by “Bodyguard” co-star Kevin Costner, who convinced her to “just be herself.” (Click on the audio player to hear Whitney Houston)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

We’ll see Houston on the big screen one last time in August, when the movie “Sparkle” is released. Ironically, the film deals with a singing group that has to deal with the pitfalls of fame and drugs, a story that (sadly) bears more than a passing resemblance to Houston’s own life. While we mourn the tragic circumstances of her loss, we do so knowing that her talent will live on, in music that will be listened to and enjoyed for generations to come.
