AVOIDING URKEL REFERENCES MATTERS TO JALEEL WHITE

Jaleel White who is currently a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, was a huge television star in the 90′s starring as loveable nerd  Steven Urkel on the family sitcom Family Matters. During Urkel’s pop culture apex, the character inspired The Urkel Doll, and even the cereal Urkel-Os.

We spoke to White and asked if he still keeps any of the Urkel merchandise.  White, being a practical adult, explains why having Urkel collectibles around the house could be a buzzkill, especially if one is in a romantic mood.

DID JALEEL WHITE DO THAT? YES, HE DID

During the 1990’s, Jaleel White was one of the most beloved television actors, playing the nerdy but loveable kid on the comedy series, Family Matters.  Since the show ended in 1998, White still acted but also went to college.  White is a contestant on the new season of Dancing with the Stars, which makes its season premiere tonight, and told us that he got into acting to pay for his college education, and had no idea how successful he would be on the show. White goes on to tell us that he had no vision of how his career would play out after playing such a popular character.

ASHLEY JUDD NO LONGER ‘MISSING’ IN ACTION

TAKING OVER OSCAR: WE TALK TO PRODUCER BRIAN GRAZER

As a producer, Brian Grazer boasts one of the most impressive resumes in the business.  Among the hit films that Grazer, with his Imagine partner Ron Howard, has has made are “Apollo 13,” “Liar Liar,” “The Da Vinci Code,” and 2002 Best Picture Oscar winner “A Beautiful Mind.”  In addition, he’s produced such Emmy-winning TV shows as “Arrested Development” and “24.”  As one of Hollywood’s elite producers, it’s no surprise that he’s been tapped to produce the 84th Academy Awards telecast, which will air February 26 on ABC.

We caught up with Grazer this morning when the Oscar nominations were unveiled and talked to him about the task ahead.  And with so much Hollywood talent involved in the awards show, we asked Grazer which is more difficult to produce: a movie or the Oscars? This edition of the Academy Awards has already sparked it share of controversy.  “Rush Hour” and “Tower Heist” director Brett Ratner was originally slated to produce the telecast, but bowed out after making an unfortunate choice of words while promoting the latter movie.  Ratner’s withdrawal led to Eddie Murphy pulling out as the show’s host.  After losing two key components to the Oscar telecast, the Academy asked Grazer to come in and make sure preparations for the show ran smoothly.  Grazer then recruited one of Oscar’s most beloved hosts, Billy Crystal, to return to the Academy Awards stage once again.  After all of the early tumult, Grazer told us, he felt it was important to bring a sense of stability to the show. In his eight previous stints hosting the telecast, Crystal’s trademark has a huge opening musical number, which is often cited as the highlight of the show.  Will we get another one this year?  Grazer says we can count on it.  (Click on the audio player to hear Brian Grazer)

Grazer’s been on the other side of the Oscar camera before, as an Academy Award winner.  And he admitted that he finds it less nerve-wracking to produce the show than to sit in the audience as a nominee.  In fact, he shared a funny story about how his nerves got the better of him when “Apollo 13″ was nominated for Best Picture.  (Click on the audio player to hear Brian Grazer)

NO FUTURE REUNIONS FOR DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

After eight seasons, the ABC hit series Desperate Housewives will be coming to an end in May. Fans of the series are wondering if any future reunions are planned for television, just as Sex and the City did by making two theatrical films. However, creator/producer/writer Marc Cherry said that unlike Sex and the City (which lasted only six seasons and 69 episodes on HBO, compared to Desperate Housewives which has done eight seasons and over 150 episodes), there isn’t much more to be told, so don’t expect any reunions. WANT TO PARTY WITH OSCAR? HERE’S HOW

Beverly Hills, CA – Oscar Night America (ONA), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ grassroots program that enables local charities to host Oscar® viewing parties and raise money for their organizations, kicks off its 19th year in 2012.

On Sunday, February 26, 49 cities will host official Oscar viewing parties during the 84th Academy Awards® ceremony. All events will feature the live broadcast of the Awards presentation on the ABC Television Network.

“Oscar night is an event meant to be a shared with others. This network of fundraising parties across the nation is a natural extension of that experience, and also represents the year-round philanthropic work the Academy does,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “This February we are thrilled to be able to celebrate the movies with fans nationwide while supporting charities around the country.”

The ONA 2012 locations are Albuquerque, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Charlottesville, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Grand Rapids (MI), Greensboro/Winston-Salem, Greenville (SC), Hartford, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Knoxville, Las Vegas, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Orlando, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Providence, Raleigh, Richmond, Sacramento, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Springfield (MO), Tampa and Tucson.

Most parties are black-tie affairs, though some are less formal. Some partygoers dress up as famous couples and some events feature limousine arrivals and red carpets complete with local celebrities, paparazzi and press interviews for arriving guests.

To set these parties apart from the thousands of other events taking place on Oscar Night, each ONA party receives from the Academy copies of the official commemorative poster and the official Oscar show program, among other items.

Only one charity party in a given media market may participate in ONA. Events are entirely produced by local nonprofit organizations, with the active participation of the local ABC-TV affiliate station.

Last year 51 charities hosted viewing parties for the 83rd Academy Awards, raising more than $3.5 million, all of it remaining in local communities. With 17,332 guests attending nationwide, ONA 2011 benefitted such charities as the American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics, United Way, Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Ellie Fund (breast cancer support services).

Since its inception in 1994, the program has generated nearly $33.5 million in funding for a wide spectrum of charitable organizations – every cent staying within the community where it was raised.

For the 19th consecutive year, Concept Marketing Development of Santa Barbara, California, will assist the Academy in coordinating the program.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

JERI RYAN PROVES SHE’S PROUD OF HER ‘BODY’

Sure, there are plenty of female cops on TV, but it’s rare to find a successful crime drama show with two women in the lead roles.  ABC’s “Body of Proof,” starring Jeri Ryan and Dana Delany, has proven to be an exception.  Ryan notes that, although the show certainly has its share of male admirers, women seem to be the show’s biggest fans.  And she’s proud to be on a quality show that portrays its leading characters as strong role models for younger women.

A new episode of “Body of Proof” airs tonight at 10/9 central on ABC.
