It was a “super” weekend at the box office. Super 8, the J.J. Abrams action movie, was #1 this weekend, taking in $37.0 million. Not only did Abrams write and direct the film, he also produced it with Steven Spielberg. Super 8 is by far one of the most entertaining films so far this year, and should keep doing great business at the box office in the coming weeks.
Last weeks number one film, X-Men:First Class fell one spot to #2 pulling in $25.0 million, bringing its total earnings to $98.9 million in North America. Of the many action movies this summer, X-Men:First Class has received the best reviews, which should breathe new life to the X-Men movie franchise.
The Hangover Part 2 continues to perform well at the box office, coming in at #3 this week grossing $18.5 million. Now in its third week of release, the film has made $216.6 million domestically. It might even do as well as the first Hangover film, which earned $277,322,503.
Rounding out the top five movies at the box office this weekend are the family movie, Kung Fu Panda 2, at #4 making $16.6 million, and at #5 is the action film, Pirates of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides, which earned $10.8 million.
.
X-Men: First Class won the weekend box office earning $56.0 million. The film received great reviews and is considered to be one of the best origin films.
Last weekend’s #1 movie, The Hangover Part II which broke box office records last weekend, fell to #2 this weekend pulling in $32.4 million. The film has now earned $186.9 million. Another sequel to this film has been green lit and is now in the writing stages.
The family animated film Kung Fu Panda 2, came in at #3 grossing $24.3 million. The movie is a success worldwide, and will stay near the top of the box office in the coming weeks.
Rounding out the top five films are the adventure film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, at #4 making $18.0 million, and at #5 was the comedy hit, Bridesmaids, earning $12.1 million.
.

It is no surprise that Pirates of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides was #1 at the box office this weekend grossing $90.1 million. This is the biggest opening weekend for a movie so far this year. The last movie to gross that much was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 in November, 2010. Despite earning upwards of $90 million, some Hollywood experts predicted the film would earn even more. Worldwide, Pirates has already made $346,400,000, more than covering the $250 million that it cost to make.
The comedy Bridesmaids was far behind at #2, taking in $21.1 million in its second week of release. The film received very good reviews, and is a hit for Universal Pictures, despite the new ways that the studio has decided to publicize its movies.
The action movie Thor, which was the top movie for two consecutive weeks, fell to #3 this weekend making $15.5 million. In its third week of release, the film keeps bringing in audiences, who can’t wait for a sequel to the film.
Rounding out the top five at the weekend box office were the action movie, Fast Five at #4 earning $10.6 million, and the FOX movie, Rio, took in an additional $4.7 million in the #5 spot in its sixth week of release.
.
The action movie Thor was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend for the second week in a row, taking in $34.5 million. In just two weeks of release, Thor has earned $119.3 million in North America alone. A Thor sequel is already in the works.
The comedy Bridesmaids starring SNL’s Kirsten Wiig, who also co-wrote the film, came in at #2 earning $24.4 million. The film earned more than most Hollywood insiders thought it would, and received good reviews. Expect this movie to stay near the top of the box office for at least a few weeks.
The action movie Fast Five landed at #3 this weekend grossing $19.5 million, making the movie the number one film at the box office so far this year. However, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is opening in theatres this week and most are predicting that it will overtake Fast Five and be the top grossing movie of the year.
Rounding out the top five films were the action/horror movie Priest, starring Paul Bettany at #4 which had a disappointing opening at just $14.5 million, and the family movie Rio landed at #5 making
$8 million in its fifth week of release.

As expected, the action movie Thor based on the Marvel comic book, was #1 at the box office this weekend earning $66,000,000. Despite earning mixed reviews from film critics, the film seemed to have satisfied its loyal following. A sequel for Thor is already in the works, and filming has started for The Avengers, which features Thor, The Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America. The Avengers will be released in 2012.
Fast Five, last weeks top movie, dropped to #2 this weekend grossing $32,519,000. This is a 62% drop from last week when it earned $83,000,000. Despite the drop, the movie still did quite well this weekend, and like most films in their second week of release, the drop was expected. Fast Five has earned $251,049,340 worldwide.
In what some think is a surprise, the romantic comedy Jumping the Broom was #3 at the box office, earning $13,700,000. Many thought Something Borrowed or Rio would earn more than Jumping the Broom.
Rounding out the top five films this weekend were the romantic comedy, Something Borrowed, starring Kate Hudson at #4 taking in a disappointing $13,155,000, and the family movie Rio landed at #5 grossing $8,200,000.

The Fast Five dominated the weekend box office taking in $83.6 million. This is the biggest opening of any film so far this year. Universal Pictures, the studio which released the film, is likely breathing a sigh of relief having a bona fide breakaway hit, after having a few years of box office duds. The studio was so sure that Fast Five was going to be successful, that another sequel, Fast Six, is already in the works.
Rio, the musical animated hit, was #2 at the box office, taking in another $14.4 million. This brings its total to $103.6 million in its third week of release.
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, which was in the second spot at the box office last weekend, dropped to #3 this week earning $10.1 million. Perry is already at work on his next film, Good Deeds, which will be released in 2012.
Rounding out the top five movies were the romantic drama, Water For Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon at #4 earning $9.1 million, and at #5 was the Disney teen flick, Prom, pulling in $5.0 million.
.

Russell Brand should be feeling great today. Brand has two movies at the top of the box office. The family movie, Hop, starring his voice, was the #1 film at the box office this weekend for the second week in a row, earning $21.7 million. The film is presently the only new family movie in theatres, and should continue to be at the top of the box office for the next few weeks.
Brand’s other new movie, Arthur, the remake of the 1981 classic comedy, was #2 this weekend pulling in $12.6 million. Despite its mostly negative reviews, the film still performed rather well.
The action film, Hanna, starring Saoirse Ronan and Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, came in at #3 grossing $12.3 million. The film is about a sixteen year old assassin, and received mostly positive reviews. By word of mouth, it should attract more of an audience in the coming weeks.
Rounding out the top five films this weekend was Soul Surfer (based on the true story of a girl who lost her arm in a surfing accident) at #4 earning $11.1 million, and the horror movie Insidious came in at #5 earning $9.7 million in its second week of release.
.
The family movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid:Rodrick Rules, won the weekend box office taking in $24.4 million. The movie is based on novels for young adults, which has a great following and is beloved by many.
The action movie Sucker Punch, directed by Zack Snyder, came in second place grossing $19.0 million. The film was nearly tied for first place at the box office Friday night, but slipped into the second place spot, most likely based on bad word of mouth. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, the film was still expected to be the top movie at the box office.
Last weeks number one film, Limitless, dropped to third place earning $15.2 million. This is not too bad of a drop, considering the competition against the new films which opened this weekend.
Rounding out the top five movies this weekend, were The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey making $11.0 million in fourth place, and landing at number five was the family animated movie, Rango, which earned $9.8 million.
.

The early weekend box office numbers have this weekend’s movies in a tight race. Limitless, the Bradley Cooper drama co-starring Robert De Niro, claimed the top spot earning $19,000,000. The film received moderately positive reviews.
Rango, the family animated movie starring the voice of Johnny Depp, continues to do well at the box office coming in at #2, grossing $15,300,000. The film continues to earn money in its third week of release.
Last weeks number one movie, Battle: Los Angeles, fell to #3 making $14,600,000. The film dropped 58% from last weekend. However, Battle: LA will continue to stay in the top 5 at the box office in the coming weeks.
Rounding out the top five movies was the legal drama, The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey at #4 earning $13,400,000; and at #5 was the slapstick comedy, Paul, starring Simon Pegg and Jason Bateman, which earned $13,200,000.
.
As everyone expected, Battle:Los Angeles dominated at the box office this weekend taking in $36.0 million. The film received mostly positive reviews, and the special effects were amazing. There was no doubt Battle: Los Angeles would take the top spot, it was just a matter of much it would earn.
The family animated movie, Rango, which claimed last weeks top spot, fell to second place grossing $23.1 million. This is not bad considering three other movies, Red Riding Hood, Battle: Los Angeles, and Mars Needs Moms, all opened this weekend.
Red Riding Hood finished in third place pulling in a very disappointing $14.1 million. The film received mostly negative reviews, despite having a likeable cast led by Amanda Seyfried.
Rounding out the top five at the box office were the romantic thriller, The Adjustment Bureau, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, which came in forth place earning $11.5 million, and the disappointment of the weekend was the Walt Disney animated family film, Mars Needs Moms, making only $6.8 million in the fifth place spot.
