Kate Winslet won the second Golden Globe of her career tonight for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, for her performance in Mildred Pierce.

Comedian Ricky Gervais didn’t make a lot of friends in Hollywood when he hosted the Golden Globe Awards last year. By making fun of many celebrities — and even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which stages the awards — Gervais brought tons of controversy to the normally stoic affair. But the bruised egos made for great publicity, and Gervais was invited back to host this year’s edition of the awards extravaganza.

While promoting his new HBO series, “Life’s Too Short,” at the Television Critics Association meetings, Gervais talked about his frank and fearless attitude toward the Golden Globes. BRUCE WILLIS CONFIRMS EXPENDABLES SEQUEL IN THE WORKS

Last year, Bruce Willis returned to the genre which made him a star–action movies. Willis starred in the action movies Red and The Expendables, where he shared the screen with close friend Sylvester Stallone.

The Expendables was a huge hit at the box office, and not only reestablished Stallone as a top movie action hero, but also brought back action films as they were during the the 1980′s, with explosions and over-the-top action. Last night, Willis (who was a presenter at the Golden Globe awards) told us backstage that a sequel to The Expendables is in the works, and that he will most likely be back once again with Stallone. What a year it has been for Jim Parsons. His television show, The Big Bang Theory, is a huge hit, and he won an Emmy earlier this year for his role on the show. Robert Downey Jr. left Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards ceremony with his third piece of hardware, winning the Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Music/Comedy) category for his role in “Sherlock Holmes.” There was some pretty stiff competition in the race, to the point where he said his wife, Susan, had been pessimistic about his chances. Robert, though, never had a doubt. Or so he says.

SANDRA BULLOCK BLIND-SIDED BY FIRST AWARD

Apparently, third time’s the charm for Sandra Bullock… or was it the fourth? Bullock, who earned Golden Globe nominations for her roles in “While You Were Sleeping” and “Miss Congeniality,” doubled her chances this year. And while she lost out to Meryl Streep in the Best Actress (Music/Comedy) category, Bullock’s role in “The Blind Side” finally earned her a statuette. Ironically, she took the nominated roles in “Blind Side” and “The Proposal” over a role in “Bakery,” a film she owns the rights to herself. Backstage, she talked about the irony of choosing other people’s movies over her own.

'AVATAR' GLOBE WIN: A HIGH FOR SCI-FI

“Avatar” was a big winner at the Golden Globe awards tonight in Hollywood, picking up the trophy for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and also for James Cameron as Best Director. After his picture’s big wins, Cameron talked about how he’s excited about “Avatar’s” role in the evolution of the 3-D revolution, but he’s even more excited about what “Avatar’s” wins mean for the science fiction genre.

ROLE IS 'GOOD' AS GOLD FOR JULIANA MARGULIES

On a night when many of the television awards went to cable shows and their stars, Julianna Margulies picked up a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Alicia on CBS’ “The Good Wife.” In explaining that her show feels more like a cable show than a network show, Margulies also made amends for an acceptance speech faux pas, and thanked the people she thought did the most to win her the award.
