THOR DEMOLISHES THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

As expected, the action movie Thor based on the Marvel comic book, was #1 at the box office this weekend earning $66,000,000. Despite earning mixed reviews from film critics, the film seemed to have satisfied its loyal following. A sequel for Thor is already in the works, and filming has started for The Avengers, which features Thor, The Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America. The Avengers will be released in 2012.

Fast Five, last weeks top movie, dropped to #2 this weekend grossing $32,519,000.  This is a 62% drop from last week when it earned $83,000,000. Despite the drop, the movie still did quite well this weekend, and like most films in their second week of release, the drop was expected. Fast Five has earned $251,049,340 worldwide.

In what some think is a surprise, the romantic comedy Jumping the Broom was #3 at the box office, earning $13,700,000. Many thought Something Borrowed or Rio would earn more than Jumping the Broom.

Rounding out the top five films this weekend were the romantic comedy, Something Borrowed, starring Kate Hudson at #4 taking in a disappointing $13,155,000, and the family movie Rio landed at #5 grossing  $8,200,000.

FAST FIVE DESTROYS THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE COMPETITION

The Fast Five dominated the weekend box office taking in $83.6 million.  This is the biggest opening of any film so far this year.  Universal Pictures, the studio which released the film, is likely breathing a sigh of relief having a bona fide breakaway hit, after having a few years of box office duds.  The studio was so sure that Fast Five was going to be successful, that another sequel, Fast Six, is already in the works.

Rio, the musical animated hit, was #2 at the box office, taking in another $14.4 million.  This brings its total to $103.6 million in its third week of release.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, which was in the second spot at the box office last weekend, dropped to #3 this week earning $10.1 million. Perry is already at work on his next film, Good Deeds, which will be released in 2012.

Rounding out the top five movies were the romantic drama, Water For Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon at #4 earning $9.1 million, and at #5 was the Disney teen flick, Prom, pulling in $5.0 million.

RIO WINS THE WEEKEND BOX OFFICE FOR SECOND WEEK IN A ROW

The family movie Rio won the weekend box office for the second consecutive week, pulling in $26.8 million. The film is currently #1 all over the world, and should remain near the top of the box office for the coming weeks.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, which Perry wrote, directed, produced, and starred in, came in at #2 earning $25.8 million. This follows the trend of most of Perry’s films opening quite well. Perry has one of the most loyal fan bases of those who see his films and watch his television shows.

The romantic drama Water For Elephants, starring Academy Award Winners Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz, and Robert Pattinson came in at #3 grossing $17.5 million.  These numbers are impressive considering that the film was not marketed for young people, showing that there are still good movies out there which target an adult audience.

Rounding out the top five films at the weekend box office were the family film, Hop, earning another $12.5 million (which brings its total earnings to $100.5 million) at #4, and at #5 was the horror flick, Scream 4, which brought in $7.2 million.

JAMIE FOXX IS ‘JUST GETTING STARTED’

Jamie Foxx is both an Oscar winner and a Grammy winner, a rare feat that’s been achieved by a select few.

When Fox All Access caught up with him in Brazil for the world premiere of his new movie, “Rio,” Foxx told us that although the awards are certainly nice, he doesn’t even want to look at them… because he doesn’t want to feel like he’s peaked yet!

“Rio” is playing now in theaters everywhere. For more information about the movie, visit the official website at www.rio-themovie.com.

HOW RODRIGO SANTORO WAS DRAWN TO HIS ‘RIO’ ROLE (AND VICE VERSA)

In an animated movie dominated by our fine feathered friends (and other assorted animals), Rodrigo Santoro stands out as one of “Rio’s” primary human characters. He plays Tulio, the orinthologist who tries to mate Blu and Jewel, the world’s last two blue macaws.

When Fox All Access talked to the Brazilian actor on the sands of Copacabana beach, he told us that after he took the role, the character was literally modeled after him.

TAIO CRUZ FINDS MUSICAL INSPIRATION (AND PARTIES) WITH THE STARS IN RIO

British hitmaker Taio Cruz contributed a new track, “Telling The World,” to the soundtrack of the movie “Rio.”  The pairing makes sense — although Cruz was born in London, he’s Brazilian on his mother’s side.  Even with that heritage, he hadn’t been to Rio since he was a baby, so getting to travel there for the world premiere of “Rio” was quite an experience for him.  And yes, he told Fox All Access he found the trip musically inspiring, thanks in part to the stars of the movie.

ANNE HATHAWAY PROUD TO BE PART OF THE ‘RIO’ TEAM

In her first movie role, Anne Hathaway wore a tiara on her head. In her latest movie role, she’s got a tuft of feathers instead! She voices the character of Jewel, a blue macaw, in the new animated comedy “Rio.”

We spoke to Hathaway the day after the film’s world premiere in Brazil, and she told us how thrilled she was that the efforts of the “Rio” team are finally hitting the big screen.
